Police in Mpigi district have in custody six people accused of trying to rob goods in transit valued at sh500m.

The suspects were intercepted in the wee hours of Wednesday morning at Kagaba village in Kiringente sub county while offloading powdered milk from a Mercedes Benz number UAN 821J  on to a Fuso truck number UAU 395Q at about 2.00am

Police acted after a tip off from area residents who suspected an illegal activity in the absolute dark.

Katonga Region police spokesperson Joseph Turya has identified the suspects as Basajjakambwe Samuel the Fuso truck driver, Bakayiremwe Iddi the Mercedes Benz driver, Namudala Christopher who was alleged to buy the robbed milk, Isabirye Laston the Mercedes Benz turn-boy, Nsimbi Baker who claimed to be owner of the milk and he was the seller together with Nafula Maureen.

Turya says that the Mercedes Benz was carrying 854 bags of powdered milk each containing 25kg all valued at over sh 500m.

Turya says that transporting goods of such high value without an escort is risky and it would be exposing the goods to robbery especially during the Christmas festive season.

Turya  says the suspects will be charged with robbery when investigations are complete.
