President Yoweri Museveni has consoled milk farmers with word that the government is in the process of amplifying Casein a protein component in milk to address the issue of quality in milk export.
This comes after a dispute between Uganda and Kenya recently that saw the later reject 19 truckloads of Lato milk from Uganda worth over a billion Shillings over quality concerns. The move by Kenya has since taken a huge toll on milk prices in Uganda.
Museveni reassured milk farmers at Gatete Catholic Church playground in Chahafi parish, Murora sub-county in Kisoro district on Wednesday afternoon, that the process of enhancing the Casein component in milk has already started.
According to Museveni, Casein production will besides easing tension between Uganda and her neighbors provide a market for milk exports since the component is highly marketable in America, which is ready to buy from Uganda.
Casein is a family of related proteins commonly found in mammalian milk especially cows that has a wide variety of uses including being a major component of cheese and food additive.
Last week the Ugandan government wrote to Kenyan counterparts through the department of foreign affairs demanding a response within 14 days regarding the confiscated 23 tonnes of Lato Milk products produced by Pearl Dairies Ltd.
Kyambadde Minister of Trade noted that the trade balance has always favored Kenya because it exports more goods to Uganda than we export to Kenya.
She, however, refrained from any form of retaliation by banning Kenyan products on to the Ugandan market citing the East African Community spirit.
Also in the statement, Uganda demanded that Kenya immediately release the seized consignment of (Lato)branded milk as they were duly cleared by the relevant Kenyan government bodies for importation into Kenya and are not contraband, substandard and or counterfeit as alleged.
