Fuming Arcade traders who have resorted to working on the streets of Kampala to earn a living have accused KCCA officials of extorting money in form of bribes in exchange for their operations.

The traders who decided to run to the streets to do business on Mobile vehicles claim it was the only available option for them considering that arcades remain closed yet they must fend for themselves and dependents.

The bitter traders claim the majority are forced to part with close to 100.000 shillings in bribes daily resulting from greedy KCCA officials who have made it a habit to show up in turns multiple times a day demanding bribes.

The traders say they can’t resist donating money to the threatening officers for fear of losing their workspace .

On Monday Police carried out an operation on various streets that saw the arrest of several traders who were caught operating mobile vehicles.

The traders working along Nabugabo rd and Namirembe rd were forced to pay ESP fine after police seized their vehicles.

Police Mouthpiece Fred Enanga said they were operating illegally on both sides of the road making the passage narrow and with no social distancing.

Enanga further advised the traders to be patient and wait for the president’s next directives instead of throwing themselves into more trouble.

By the time of this report, various attempts to get a comment from the Public Relations Officer KCCA Peter Kaujju were futile after he briefly responded to a phone call claiming he was preoccupied in a meeting and would respond later.
