Police have manhandled the Makindye East Member of Parliament, Allan Ssewanyana for inciting violence during an eviction process.
The legislator who struggled to resist arrest was picked up at a demolished Kyengeza, Munyonyo market in Makindye Division, Kampala and forcibly bundled into a NEMA pick up and fled off.
Police alongside the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) on Monday morning stormed a temporal market at valley zone, Kabuuma in Makindye division and started demolishing structures put up by traders who they accused of encroaching on a wetland.
The market was illegally instituted during the COVID-19 lockdown period by traders who escaped from Mulungi and Ggaba markets following the flooding of L.Victoria banks.
The distressed traders claim they were forced to operate there to earn a living and have been tossed by NEMA officials who chased them from Mulungi on the same grounds.
The traders who are crying of difficult times following the lockdown have been left devasted after their goods were confiscated and structures destroyed by the environment police.
The area residents who seemed to have casually blended in with the new market are also now living in fear after NEMA officials warned them to leave the wetland area they have built on without any compensation.
Naome Namara Karekaho the Public relations officer NEMA says they decided to embark on the eviction exercise without prior notice because the traders had encroached in the wetland illegally
She says they would have notified the traders if they had an agreement or been granted permission to operate there.
Karekaho says no one will not be compensated for invading on wetlands and degrading them because NEMA simply comes to reclaim it.
