A lifeless body of a 93-year-old man has been discovered at his house by locals in Manafwa district in the Eastern part of Uganda.

The deceased identified as Boniface Kabale a resident of Bunabutsale parish, Bunabutsale sub-county in Manafwa district was found lying in a pool of blood on his small bed at his house on Monday morning.

Boniface was reportedly butchered on the head and neck by his assailants and left for the dead.

The locals who immediately alerted the police claim the deceased who lived alone could have been attacked by robbers who wanted to steal funds he that he recently obtained from a government scheme for the elderly called SAGE.

Police in Manafwa have started investigations into the brutal killing and once caught, the suspects will be charged with murder.

In Uganda, the Social Assistance Grants for Empowerment (SAGE) Scheme is a form of direct income support grants targeting the Senior Citizens Grants mainly persons of 65 years and above who are each currently receiving Shs25,000 monthly in 57 districts.

However, the government released a new list for only Ugandans aged 80 years and above to be included on the SAGE  by  July 1, 2020.
