Police in Kumi has thrown into custody 24 drunkards nabbed in a local bar while drinking alcohol on Wednesday night in total disregard of the Covid-19 guidelines.
The drunk crowd had put up a scene in the local neighborhood by playing loud music and dancing around with no social distancing or wearing face masks.
It is alleged that people have been camping at the same bar owned by Marion Apedun, in Northern Division in Kumi Municipality right after the lockdown was eased.
Some of those arrested include Samuel Obwanga, a Veterinary Officer in Kumi Sub County, Stephen Emuria, an Internal Auditor at Kumi Municipality; Emmanuel Olupot, an Engineer in Kumi Municipality and Emmanuel Odeke, a teacher at Ngora High School in Ngora District. Others are Bernard Okanya and Morris Kuwen, all staff of Kumi Municipality.
Apedun who had hosted the drunkards has since run away for fear of being arrested and police has started the search for her.
David Ongom Mudong, the East Kyoga Region Police Spokesman, says the group has been charged with doing a negligent act likely to cause the spread of infectious disease contrary to Section 171 of the Penal Code Act.
Mudong says are working with the Kumi Municipal authorities to revoke the license of the bar after investigations are complete.
