The national task force on COVID 19 is seating today with the president Yoweri Museveni to discuss issues related to public outcry on the lockdown ease.

The revelation was made by the government chief whip during plenary after several complaints from legislators on the need for the government to reopen other sectors of the economy that were closed to contain the spread of COVID-19.

On Tuesday, several legislators asked the government to fully reopen the economy and intensify sensitization on the implementation of the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

The legislators cited general merchandise traders , places of worship , entertainment hubs among others that are still under lockdown rendering many jobless.

The Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga noted that her office is loaded with petitions from different Ugandans whose businesses are still under lockdown.

In response, the Government Chief Whip, Ruth Nankabirwa said the meeting happening today will deliberate on the issues raised in parliament including the hurdles being faced by the government in the distribution of face masks that have still not reached the entire population.

Nankabirwa however noted that Kampala which is one of the hot spots for COVID-19 infections might have to be put under tight restrictions as a result of soaring numbers and deaths.

Since March this year, the lockdown has been eased on public transport, arcades, malls, and beauty salons among others while Education, Sports, Entertainment industry, and places of worship remain closed.

Uganda’s cumulative cases now stand at 2,426 Covid-19 positive cases, 1,267 recoveries and 25 deaths.
