State Minister of Tourism Godfrey Kiwanda Ssuubi has revealed that the tourism sector is mourning a huge loss this financial year after losing close to 2 Billion US Dollars due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, which is close to 4 quarters of the financial year.

Addressing journalists at Uganda Media Center ahead of the World Tourism Day, Minister Kiwanda Ssuubi noted that COVID-19 Pandemic paralyzed all the tourism activities because it led to the closure of the various tourism sectors and this made the Country lose a full quarter of the financial year.

Kiwanda however expressed hope that the tourism sector will recover and grow again once the Entebbe international airport resumes business next month.

The airport will officially reopen on the 1st of October 2020 and the civil aviation authority has recently affirmed that all is set for the reopening including all the necessary sops.

Kiwanda has therefore encouraged tourists who had already paid to visit Uganda to travel.

Kiwanda says the airport will largely be open to tourists and not commercial flights.

Minister Kiwanda Ssuubi has appealed to Politicians to avoid Election violence ahead of the 2021 General elections because election violence is one of the major factors which scares away tourists.

Meanwhile, Kiwanda notes that World Tourism Day will be celebrated under the theme of Tourism and Community Development on 27th September in Fortportal tourism city, and there several activities which include bicycle riding from Kamapala to Enyanga za Walumbe Entanda in Mityana and Nakayima Tree in Mubende starting from 24th September.
