Court has finally granted bail to the embattled junior minister for lands Mwesigwa Rukutana , a week after he was remanded to Kitalya government prison.

The Minister faces charges of attempted murder, malicious damage, assault, and causing bodily harm, and threatening violence.

The Ntugamo Magistrate’s court this morning granted the distressed minister a cash bail of 4 million shillings and his passport held only to be given back when he needs to travel.

His Lawyers Owen Murangira also presented 3 sureties who were each given a non-cash bond of 50 million shillings,they include; Jim Muhwezi, former minister for information, Micheal Mawanda Igara East MP, and Bob Kabonero a businessman.

This bail application was filed last week but rejected on grounds that the state needed to conclude its investigations and the accused would likely interfere with the process.

Minister Mwesigwa was arrested on August Rukutana first remanded to Kakiika Prison in Mbarara District following acts of violence that ended with gun lofting leading to one person being injured and a motor vehicle damaged.

Court heard from the prosecution that the minister, who is also the MP for Rushenyi Constituency on September 5th, 2020 at Kagugu Village in Ntungamo district, unlawfully attempted to cause the death of one Daniel Rweburungi contrary to section 204(a) of the Penal Code Act.

Rukutana later appeared at Ntungamo Magistrate’s Court for a bail application but was sent back to Kitalya Prison until the 15th of September 2020.
