Police at Entebbe are investigating a 39-year-old fraudster for stealing genuine ATM cards from several bank customers and replacing them with fake ones.
Wandera Geoffrey, a fisherman and resident of Abaita babiri in Entebbe municipality was netted at Stanbic bank by security officers while exchanging a woman’s ATM card with a fake one.
Luke Owoyesigirye the Kampala Metropolitan deputy police mouthpiece says Wandera reportedly approached an old woman in the ATM enclosure and offered to help her operate the ATM machine and in the process switched the cards.
Owoyesigirye says police also found Wandera in possession of 7 ATM cards registered in different names under several banks.
These include; Sarah Nakawuka-centenary bank, Isabirye Sula- Equity bank, Nabadda Sarah- Tropical bank, Fred Mwesezi- pride microfinance, and Bosco Bongomin; centenary bank, and 2 other credit cards that had faded identities.
He says police have started investigations to ascertain if Wandera has a criminal background and if the name he gave himself is legitimately his.
Owoyesigirye has in the meantime called on all persons who appear on the list of the ATM cards mentioned to turn up at Entebbe Police Station for follow-up and collect them, he has also cautioned the public to be aware of such fraudsters especially at ATM points.
