Police in Katwe has arrested a gang of 9 thugs for conning millions in cash from innocent Ugandans using various Mobile money platforms.
The suspects including their ringleader by Michael Kinalwa, and 9 others were arrested at their residence in Masajja, Makindye-Sabagabo in Wakiso District during a police operation.
The group that is believed to be part of a bigger gang of jobless youth still at large is called ‘Call Call’ conmen.

Police were able to get various suspected stolen items that were recovered from the suspects’ residence including 3 television sets, music systems, machetes, government stores, and marijuana in their possession.
Mobile Money Con Stars
Luke Owoyesigyire the Deputy Kampala Metropolitan police mouthpiece says the operation was carried out after police got intelligence information pinning the suspects to the crime.
He explains that the group works by using mobile phones to call their victims under the pretext that they have won prizes or by sending fake mobile money messages.
Owoyesigyire further explains that the thugs later call their victims and ask to be sent money before switching off their phone and discarding the lines.
He adds that the same group has been accused of breaking into people’s houses and stealing their household property.

Owoyesigyire also says these criminals have on several occasions stoned and ganged up against police officers during arrests in their area.
”On Sunday, 07/03/2021, at around 2 pm, they attacked one Nagasha while driving in the area and robbed her bag containing about US$30,000 and UShs300,000.A one Musudan stopped the vehicle, banged the door and when the frightened lady opened the door, they grabbed the bag and took off.” Owoyesigyire said
