State House Uganda has implored the Uganda Communication Commission -UCC to take stern action against a section of individuals using their social media platforms to pronounce the president dead.
This directive is included in a press statement released by the Senior Presidential Press Secretary, Linda Nabusayi Wamboka.
In the statement, Nabusayi says UCC should use its mandate as a telecom and communications regulator to investigate and bring to book all those inciting the public by spreading false and baseless propaganda.
”Those creating unnecessary fear and panic among the public by spreading fake news are criminals intent on causing havoc. UCC should investigate social media abuse and take action,” Nabusayi said.
She further explains that the President is working less in public and more digitally because of the measures in place to regulate the spread of Covid19.
“The President announced a total lockdown and therefore cut down on his public engagements. Most of his work has been through virtual meetings, radio and televisions.
Since death rumours started circulating about the death of president Yoweri Museveni, he has made 2 appearances in the public this week and is expected to make another tomorrow.
On Monday, Museveni pics trended on social media as he appeared with first lady Janet Museveni for a cabinet meeting.
The President who appeared healthy and energetic was clad in his usual white shirt, khaki like trousers and white hat.
On Tuesday Museveni made his way to Matugga in Wakiso district accompanied by Kenya’s Deputy President Williams Ruto to lay a foundation stone for the construction of a multi-billion Biological Drugs and mRNA Vaccine Manufacturing Facility.
He was however greeted by hundreds of fans along the roadside waiting anxiously to have a glimpse of the man they thought was feared dead.
Crowds from Bwaise, Kawempe, Kagoma, Matugga camped at the roadside, ululating while waving at him as he waved back from his car.
Yesterday, the ICT minister Hon Chris Baryounsi while at the Uganda Media centre also sounded a warning to persons spreading the fake news saying they will be dealt with. He indicated that the President was launching a factory and in good health.
Nabusayi has re-assured the public that the President is safe and continues to carry out his duties as head of state.
“He is safe and carrying on his duties scientifically. Tomorrow, virtually, he will be officially opening the commemoration of the African Integration Day in his capacity as the President of Uganda and Champion of Regional Integration in Africa among other meetings. Please don’t believe everything you see or read on social media,” she said.
The news of his death started a few days ago on social medial following a fake post purportedly made by the first son, Kainerugaba Muhoozi announcing the death of his father after contracting COVID-19.
Another post claimed that Museveni had been rushed to a Germany hospital where he died from.
Despite these reports, the president made a public appearance on June 27 during the World Health Summit at Munyonyo, this did not stop rumours from spreading.
