Police have recovered the lifeless body of a 35y Old Catholic priest who drowned in Lake Bunyonyi.

The body of Nafutali Kizabona, a priest attached to Kayanga Catholic Church in Kabale Diocese was retrieved from the lake Bunyonyi after 1 day of searching by police and locals.

The deceased drowned after the canoe he was traveling on alone lost balance and capsized as he crossed from his church in Kayanga to Harutinda shores in Kitumba sub-county.

Elly Maate, Police Spokesperson for the Kigezi region says that Kizabona’s body was retrieved on Tuesday night at about 7: 00 PM by residents and the marine police deployed at the lake.

Maate has asked locals to exercise caution while crossing through the lake.

”The body of the catechist has surfaced and retrieved from the water, I want to emphasize that people who around the Lake and those who visit that side to make it a point that whenever they are crossing that side to take precautionary measures of having life jackets or empty jerrycans with leads on. Maate says.


Kizabona
is the second catechist to drown in Lake Bunyonyi in Kabale in a space of six years.

The 1st priest drowned in 2015 while travelling to conduct Sunday morning prayers.

Between 2015 and 2020, over 7 dead bodies have been recovered from the deep lake.

Lake Bunyonyi is a 900-meter deep lake and the second deepest in Africa .
