Locals in Kyemuka Zone, Kamwokya have blamed the vicious fire attack on their households on illegal power theft.

On Thursday night, an electric spark reportedly caused a fire breakdown that left 2 persons dead and electrocuted several others.

Many were injured in a stampede caused by sparks from electric wires of the high-power voltages.

The same fire ravaged through makeshift houses reducing them to ashes and destroying properties worth millions of properties leaving hundreds to spend sleepless nights in the cold.

Among items destroyed include; mattresses, fridges, Television sets, and other electronics.

Now a section of locals have pinned the fire on an increase in illegal power connections in the area.

John Kasozi and Emmanuel Obonge, both residents in Kyamuka ghettos claim the spark could have been triggered by the rampant illegal power connections by locals who cannot afford to use the right channels.

“poor wiring in the area, who cannot connect power using UMEME use their own methods to connect power, because using UMEME is expensive, yet we also need power. Kasozi said.

Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, says so far two deaths have been confirmed but their identities were still unknown.
