Police in Buikwe District are hunting for suspects behind a violent mob attack on a suspected thief in Jomayi-Namatogonya zone, Kitigoma, Njeru Municipality.

The incident happened on January 9, 2024, at approximately 5:00 PM, when irate locals ganged up on the suspect for reportedly stealing money from a resident’s garden.

According to Butoto Hellen the police spokesperson for Ssezibwa Region, the locals armed with heavy stones and sticks battered the suspect until the police and local authorities came to his rescue. Butoto explains that the Kitigoma LC1 first received a distress phone call from concerned locals about an assault in the garden and he informed police officers, who swung into action.

Police officers from Kitigoma Police Post managed to move the suspect to Kitigoma Police Post, however, he later collapsed and succumbed to his injuries instantly.

She says: “Upon examination, the deceased’s body showed external marks of violence, particularly on the back and both fore and hind limbs, accompanied by a broken arm. No deep injuries or cuts were found on the body. The identity of the deceased remains unknown.”

She says the body has been transported to Jinja Referral Hospital for a Postmortem examination as investigations into the matter continue.
