A deadly dawn crash has left Busowa Town Council reeling after ten people were killed instantly when a speeding taxi smashed into a stationary trailer along the Busia Highway.
Traffic Police spokesperson SP Michael Kananura says the tragic accident occurred at about 7:00 am, turning the usually busy stretch of road into a scene of chaos and heartbreak. The Toyota Hiace UBN 817H, packed with passengers, tried to overtake another vehicle, only for a car to appear suddenly from the opposite direction.
In a desperate attempt to dodge a head-on collision, the taxi driver swerved sharply to the left but lost control and rammed straight into a parked trailer UA 647BA/UA 430AA. The impact was devastating.
Bodies lay inside the mangled taxi as shocked residents gathered, and police raced to the scene. Officers quickly transported the three survivors to hospital while the ten deceased, including the driver, were taken to the mortuary.
Kananura has described the crash as “another painful reminder of the dangers of reckless overtaking,” urging drivers to slow down and prioritize safety.
Investigations are underway as authorities piece together the final moments before the fatal impact.
