A New Year celebration quickly turned into chaos in Kireka–Bira Village, Wakiso, when a house belonging to Mercy Natukunda and her hubby (name withheld) went up in flames in the early hours of 1 January.
Natukunda and her husband had left the home late on 31 December 2025 to attend overnight prayers, only to return to shocking news.
ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Spokesman for Kampala Metropolitan says round 4:00 a.m, neighbours noticed smoke and flames consuming the house. By the time firefighters arrived, several household items including mattresses, clothes, and suitcases had been completely destroyed.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing a woman leaving the scene shortly after the fire started. Police investigations confirmed that the woman is known to the Natukundas, and she has since been arrested and is assisting authorities with inquiries.
Police are treating the incident as arson. Owoyesigyire said the force is following all leads to ensure the suspect is held accountable.
Neighbours say the fire could have been far worse had it not been noticed early.
