It has been a week of action for Uganda Police and other security agencies, who have rounded up more than 1,095 suspects across the country in a massive crackdown targeting burglars, street robbers, narcotics dealers, and criminal gangs.

Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke told journalists on Monday that public concerns over security, particularly in Greater Kampala, prompted the intensive operations.

“Some sections of society raised alarms that there are serious security concerns in the Greater Kampala area. Let me assure the public that we take these concerns very seriously,” Rusoke said.

The operations were carried out across known black spots and criminal hideouts, with notable arrests in Kira, Mukono, Kyanja, Nsanji, Katwe, and Entebbe. “In Entebbe, we arrested 20 suspects. During screening, four were confirmed to have committed aggravated robbery,” he revealed.

Gulu saw suspects arrested with more than 30 SIM cards, while Nakawa’s Lugogo Bypass was also a hotspot, yielding four arrests and recovered vehicle parts with inscriptions of number plates. Rusoke said these findings will help police trace criminal activity more efficiently.

Regional breakdowns showed that Kampala Metropolitan South alone accounted for 510 arrests. Kampala Metropolitan East 224 suspects. Kampala Metropolitan North, 3 suspects linked to a machete attack circulated on social media

Aswa West – 184 suspects, West Nile – 14 suspects ,Savannah Region – 102 suspects , East Kyoga – 27 suspects, Elgon – 19 suspects

“We are working closely with local communities, border riders, and security agencies to disrupt gangs and secure our streets. Sometimes, we have to act on suspects in their hideouts before they strike at crime scenes,” Rusoke added.

The police have pledged to continue intelligence-driven operations.
