Crime Crackdown Hits Kampala, Wakiso Again 400 Suspected Thugs Netted

Police have intensified disruptive operations across the Kampala Metropolitan Area, arresting more than 400 suspects in a sweeping crime prevention crackdown targeting crime-prone hotspots.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, SP Racheal Kawala, the coordinated operations were conducted across several divisions in Kampala and Wakiso District, leading to mass arrests and recovery of illegal items, including opium rolls and suspected house-breaking tools.

In Kira Division, Wakiso District, police raided Mulawa Trading Centre and Najjera Kamwanyi at about 8:00pm on February 24, arresting 81 suspects. On the same day, between 5:00pm and 9:00pm, officers in Old Kampala Division stormed Kisenyi Zone, Muza Zone, and surrounding areas, netting 152 suspects in one of the largest single operations.

In Kira Road Division, operations carried out on February 25 in Universal Kisaasi Sector, Kamwokya, and Kyebando led to the arrest of 49 suspects. Jinja Road Division officers also struck at around 11:00pm in Center Zone, Kaggo Buyinja, and Kinawataka in Nakawa Division, arresting 20 suspects.

The crackdown extended to Wakiso District, where Nansana Police arrested 48 suspects shortly after midnight on February 25. Earlier, at about 5:00pm, Wakiso Police Division picked up 23 suspects in Wakiso Town. In Bulenga, including Musoke Road, Kawuzi Street, Gogonya, and Kikaaya Katogo, 50 suspects were arrested during operations conducted between 4:00pm and 8:00pm. Meanwhile, in Kajjansi Police Division, six suspects were arrested in Kilyamuli, Kilumba, and Namulanda Ward.

Kawala confirmed that all suspects are currently in police custody, with cases of possession of opium and public nuisance already opened. She added that the suspects will be screened and produced before court in due course as police continue efforts to disrupt criminal networks and restore public order.
