Shock and drama gripped residents of Kireka after a woman allegedly stole her cousin’s three-month-old baby and fled to Soroti pretending the child was hers.

Police have identified the suspect as Amongin Brenda who was dramatically arrested in Soroti District after days on the run.

According to Uganda Police Force the suspect had travelled from Kalaki District and visited the home of her cousin Akunyo Sarah in Kireka claiming she wanted to process a National ID under the express service.

But things turned tragic on 5th May at around 2:00pm when the baby’s mother briefly stepped outside leaving the child asleep in the house.

On returning she reportedly found the baby gone together with the suspect.

The incident sparked panic and frantic searches before police trackers launched an operation that ended in Soroti.

Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala said the baby was safely recovered and the suspect arrested.

Investigators now suspect the woman had been living a lie after allegedly tricking her husband into believing she was pregnant.

Police say on 2nd May the suspect reportedly asked her husband for money claiming she was heading to hospital to deliver.

Authorities believe the suspect may have planned to present the stolen baby as her own child.

She is currently detained and faces criminal charges as police prepare to reunite the baby with the family.
