Four suspects linked to the killing of Uganda Rugby Cranes and Black Pirates player Sydney Gongodyo have been formally charged with murder and remanded to Luzira Prison as investigations into the shocking death continue.

Gongodyo was on June 05, mercilessly attacked by several goons and killed in a mob attack on accusations of snatching an unidentified woman’s handbag. The deceased was dragged like a chicken thief on one of the roads in Ntinda where he was clobbered to a point of no return.

Police have since arrested eleven suspect, and others are still at large.

Today, suspects, identified as Mugwisa Obed, 39, a boda boda rider from Nsimbi Ziwome Zone in Nakawa Division, Mondoni Elly, 33, a delivery agent attached to a medicinal pharmacy and resident of Luzira Portbell Road, Owino Joseph, 30, a private security guard from Bukoto, and Kabugo Henry, 21, also a boda boda rider from Bukoto Old Kira Zone, were arraigned before the Kampala City Hall Court.

According to police charge documents under Kira Road Police Station CRB 619/2026, the group is jointly accused with others still at large of murder contrary to Sections 171 and 172 of the Penal Code Act, Cap 128.

Prosecutors allege that on June 5, 2026, at Upper Naguru East Road in Kampala District, the suspects, with malice aforethought, unlawfully caused the death of Sydney Gongodyo.

The suspects appeared in court on June 11, 2026, where they were charged and subsequently remanded to Luzira Prison until June 23 as investigations continue. The state prayed to court for adjournment of the case on grounds that other suspects are still at large and investigations into the matter are still ongoing.

The presiding magistrate informed the suspects that his court has no jurisdiction to hold a trial on the matter, remanding the suspects to June 23, 2026.

Police say inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the death are still ongoing, with efforts underway to trace additional suspects who remain at large.

The case has drawn public attention due to Gongodyo’s profile as a national rugby player. During his burrial, relatives and friends demanded that a public court is conducted during trial as it was done in Ggaba with Okello Onyum, who was found guilty of murdering four minors at an early childhood development school in Ggaba.
