A 48-year-old woman was found dead inside her house after allegedly suffocating from charcoal fumes.

The deceased, identified as Nakayiza Ruth, a peasant from Mityana Central Cell in Mityana Municipality, had last been seen by neighbours on June 14, 2026, when she closed her business and went home to rest.

Days later, concern grew after neighbours noticed a foul smell coming from her locked house, with flies gathering around the door.

The worried residents alerted her relatives, who later reported the matter to police.

A team from the Mityana Police CID homicide department visited the scene and, with the help of residents, broke into the house.

Inside, they found Nakayiza’s decomposing body lying in a half-prone position.

Police investigations indicate that she died from carbon suffocation caused by a charcoal stove she had been using inside the small, poorly ventilated room.

Police have since warned the public against cooking with charcoal stoves inside bedrooms, especially at night, due to the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning and suffocation.
