A physics lesson turned fatal after a Senior Four student died following a harsh beating from his teacher at a school in Luwero.

The student, identified as Nicholas Nakibenge, met his death on Tuesday, June 16, after he was allegedly hit hard on the chest by his physics teacher, identified as Abraham Mukalazi, during a lesson at New Life Secondary School.

Nakibenge, who had spent some time away from school due to illness, had only recently returned to class while still weak and recovering.

According to his father, Joseph Amerigo Sserubogo, the family noticed something was seriously wrong after seeing blood stains on his dead son’s school uniform.

Sserubogo said the condition of the uniform showed that his son had suffered severe punishment before his death.

Preliminary police findings indicate that Nakibenge and other students had allegedly been subjected to corporal punishment on two consecutive days.

According to Savannah Regional Police spokesperson Sam Twineamazima, students were first punished on Monday after failing a physics examination paper.

The following day, the same teacher allegedly punished learners again over what was described as keeping overgrown hair.

During the Tuesday punishment, it is alleged that Mukalazi hit Nakibenge hard on the chest, causing him to collapse.

Moments later, the student reportedly started struggling to breathe before losing consciousness.

School authorities rushed to intervene and attempted to save his life by taking him on a motorcycle to the nearest Health Centre IV, but sadly, he died on the way.

One of the school directors, Paul Mukungu, condemns the teacher’s actions.

Mukungu described Nakibenge as a sick child who had recently returned to school after battling health challenges, saying the teacher showed a lack of humanity by failing to consider the learner’s condition.

Police have since arrested three suspects in connection with the incident.

Twineamazima confirmed that the suspects in custody include school warden Kenny Mubiru and another teacher, Magret Akiisa, who were both present when the incident happened.

The main suspect, physics teacher Abraham Mukalazi, is also being pursued as investigations continue into the death of the Senior Four student.
