The long arm of the law has caught up with two men accused of turning a major road project into their personal store after allegedly stealing construction materials meant for the Mityana-Mubende road.

Police in Kassanda say the suspects were found with heaps of stonebase materials belonging to Energo Project Company, the contractor building the road.

The suspects, identified as Sekyanzi Pascal, 47, and Kiyingi John, 58, were arrested after the Workers Union Chairperson at Energo Project, Mr Ngunule Sajon, received information about ongoing theft at the site.

According to police, Ngunule followed up the information and found two heaps of stonebase materials at Sekyanzi’s workplace in Kiwogo Cell, Kiganda Town Council.

Investigations later revealed that stealing the materials had allegedly become a routine activity involving the suspects and some people connected to the construction project.

But the drama did not end there.

Police also arrested Wasswa Andrew, 25, who allegedly attempted to buy the suspects’ freedom by offering Shs50,000 to the investigating officer.

Police say Wasswa claimed to be a relative of the suspects but was arrested with the alleged bribe money and charged with attempting to defeat justice.

Authorities have issued a warning to people stealing or buying road construction materials, saying such acts delay development projects and attract serious punishment.
