One person has been confirmed dead and several others injured following a road traffic accident involving a school bus and a Uganda Railways train at Namumira Village in Mukono District.

The accident occurred at approximately 6:46 a.m. on Friday, July 10, 2026, and involved a Friendship Coaches bus, registration number UAU 123Q, and a Uganda Railways train.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Rachel Kawala, the bus had been hired by Mwebaze High School, located in Bakka, Kakiri, Wakiso District, to transport students and teachers to Jinja District for a study tour. Preliminary reports indicate that the bus was carrying approximately 100 passengers at the time of the crash.

Preliminary police findings indicate that the bus was travelling at a high speed and allegedly failed to stop at the designated railway crossing as required under traffic regulations before attempting to cross the railway line.

Police say the bus entered the railway crossing, collided with the oncoming train and subsequently veered off the road.

A female adult, identified as the wife of the school’s head teacher, died at the scene. Several other occupants sustained injuries and were rushed to Mukono General Referral Hospital and other nearby health facilities for treatment.

The bus driver reportedly fled the scene immediately after the accident and remains at large. Police have launched a manhunt to identify and apprehend him.

Authorities are also working to establish the identities of all the victims and determine the full circumstances surrounding the accident.

Investigations into the crash are ongoing.
